The NPD Group has confirmed that PlayStation 4 came out on top as the best-selling console in the U.S. for January 2016.
Not only did Sony’s current-generation system beat out the Xbox One for yet another month in the States, but the PS4 also posted year-on-year growth in regards to both hardware and software sales.
Speaking in a statement released to PSU, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), commented:
“Thanks to our fans and partners for making PlayStation 4 the top-selling platform and software sales leader in January, according to NPD. PS4 also saw impressive year-over-year growth in both hardware and software sales. We appreciate the support and will continue to deliver on our promise to bring the best entertainment experiences to gamers.”
2015 proved an incredibly successful year for the PS4, with the console outselling the Xbox One on a regular basis in U.S. monthly sales. The Black Friday period was especially noteworthy, as it gave Sony its biggest ever sales during during lucrative shopping season to date.
Sony announced in early January that worldwide sales of its flagship console had reached 35.9 million units. Mad Catz claimed earlier this week that combined sales of the PS4 and Xbox One have hit the 60 million mark globally, while Electronic Arts stated that Sony is outselling its main rival by two-to-one.
Looking ahead to the rest of the year, PS4 has a number of major titles coming up, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, No Man’s Sky, The Last Guardian, Ratchet & Clank, plus of course Sony’s entry into the VR gaming space with the upcoming PlayStation VR.
