Sony’s 2-step verification for PlayStation 4 is designed to add further security to your PlayStation Network (PSN) account, and while this initiative does a fantastic job of protecting your personal details, it hasn’t been without a few wrinkles.

Users have reported a number of issues with the process, from failing to receive a verification code, 2SV text message errors, and more. Fortunately, we’re on hand to give you a hand through any problems you may encounter with the 2-step verification, so see below for our guide on the various issues that may arise.

Before we get into that however, here’s how to set-up 2SV for your account.

  1. Head to [Settings] > [PlayStation Network/Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Security] > [2-Step Verification] > [Set Up Now]. Next, enter your mobile number carefully and then select [Add].
  2. Sony will then text you a verification code. Simply enter this to authorise your mobile number to receive 2SV texts. Select [Activate] to switch on 2SV.
  3. It is strongly recommended to now make a careful note of your 10 backup codes to prevent any possible sign-in issues. Go to [Settings] > [PlayStation Network/Account Management] > [Account Information] > [Security] > [Two-Step Verification] > [Backup Codes] to find them.

And now for those pesky errors….

Problem 1: Didn’t receive verification code

Solution: Sign in with your account password and then select ‘Resend Code.’ Next, pick ’Did Not Receive Text Message’ and then ‘Sign-in Using Backup Code’ and then enter the Backup Code.

Problem 2: Didn’t receive verification code and forgot backup code, but i’m signed-in on PlayStation 4/web browser

Solution: Head to the 2-step verification menu on your PS4, accessed by hitting Settings > PlayStation Network/Account Management > Account Information > Security > Two-Step Verification. On a web browser, head to Security under Account Management. Next, head to Backup Codes and make a note of them, and then simply enter a Backup Code to sign-in.

Problem 3: No verification code or backup code, and not signed in to my account via PS4 or web browser.

Solution: You will be unable to sign in to your account, so you’ll need to contact Sony directly.

Problem 4: Received a 2SV text message but made no changes to this setting.

Solution: Immediately change our password and then contact Sony directly.

Problem 5: I try to sign-in to my account but keep getting a message saying the password is incorrect

Solution: There are some service that do not support 2-Step Verification, and therefore will not function will this feature is turned on, instead displaying a password error message. The following services do not support 2SV and you must disable the feature in order to access them:

  • Google TV
  • MediaGo
  • PSN Downloader
  • PlayStation Now on PS3 or PS Vita

Problem 6: I am being asked to enter a Verification Code/Device Setup Password despite the fact I do not have 2SV activated.

Solution: Change your password immediately if possible and the contact Sony right away, regardless if you could change your PW or not.
