Rumor: PSP2 as powerful as PS3

Sony has reportedly been bigging up its as-of-yet-unannounced PSP2 to licensees lately, with the hardware giant claiming that the pint-sized platform boasts as much power as PlayStation 3.

The news follows hot on the heels of yesterday’s murmurs of a January 27 reveal for the handheld device, which puts it in close proximity to the Japanese release of rival Nintendo’s 3DS.

Regular readers may recall that this isn’t the first time claims have been made of the platform’s technical capabilities. Previous reports late last year suggested the device would be capable of churning out visuals on par with ‘early PS3 titles.’

MCV further claims that PSP2 will include an HD screen with dual analogue sticks, and will apparently be built with both digital and physical-based content in mind, featuring ample storage for downloading media and games. A phone’s also been touted as a possible inclusion, though MCV notes it wouldn’t be a “primary function.”

Furthermore, the site goes on to state that Sony will be dropping more info on the handheld at GDC and E3 later this year. As for a release date, PSP2 will apparently be on shelves in Q4 2011, possibly as early as October.

Stay tuned for more info as it develops.
