A Sony tech brochure has revealed that the console manufacturer is apparently looking at custom ways to speed up ray tracing, which is obviously a good thing where PS5 is concerned. After all, the technology is one of the major selling points of next-generation consoles.
Sony Investigating ‘Speeding Up Ray Tracing’
It’s all pretty technical stuff, but if you’re into that sort of thing, it’s worth reading. The main point to take away from all this is that Sony seems to be looking into custom software for improving the PS5’s performance and giving it a more competitive edge, instead of utilising a conventional ‘brute force’ method.
One method use to speed up ray tracing is a spatial data structure that divides a region into cells. Improving this data structure reduces calculating time since it only runs calculations for objects in the regions that the ray passes through. A Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BHV) is a typical data structure.
Ray tracing is one of the many features supported by the PS5, which also includes an SSD for fast loading times, backwards compatibility with PS4 games, and a high-end graphics processor. You can read more about the console’s innards here.
