Sony’s squashed suggestions that the NGP’s processing power will rival that of the PlayStation 3, stating the pint-sized platform won’t be capable of operating at full whack due to battery and heat limitations.
While the PSP successor still packs considerably clout under its hood, SCEA platform researcher David Coombes played down industry rumblings indicating the NGP is as powerful as its big brother.
"Some people in the press have said wow, this thing… could be as powerful as PS3. Well, it’s not going to run at 2GHz because the battery would last five minutes," said Coombes. "And it would probably set fire to your pants."
Elsewhere, Coombes also unwrapped further reading on the handheld’s innards, as detailed below.
-The NGP’s solid state game cards for retail software will come in two flavours: 2GB & 4GB
-Coombes had this to say on memory: "I can’t talk about actual numbers, but compared to PSP we have a lot of memory," he said. "We’re closer to PS3 than PSP in terms of memory size."
-NGP’s front touch-screen and rear touch-pad can detect how much pressure gamers are applying to them.
-Players won’t be able to discern the pixels on the NGP’s 5-inch screen when anti-aliasing is switched on.
