Square Enix Looking To Make Final Fantasy VII ‘An IP With An Ever-Evolving Future’

The Final Fantasy VII Remake project isn’t going to be the last we see of the much-loved RPG, according to director Naok,i Hamaguchi, who stated at a panel at PAX West that the remake represents “an effort to pass Final Fantasy 7 onto the next generation.”

We want to make this a work that creates new fans 20 or even 30 years from now. That’s more or less the same impact 1997’s OG game had three decades ago, though we’ll need to wait a really, really long time to see if the FF7 Remake project ages as gracefully,” said Hamaguchi-san. Meanwhile, an on-screen slide mention the goal with the Remake trilogy is to “expand FF7’s future” and “move beyond being a classic of the past and shape it into an IP with an ever-evolving future.”

Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the third and final entry in the remake project, is scheduled to launch for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S on April 8, 2027. Square Enix is already planning to expand the game’s narrative with two story expansion, which will focus on Sephiroth and Vincent & the Turks.

Fans got an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation last week during Sony’s State of Play broadcast, which focussed on airship exploration and the FITS system, which offers players the chance to equip characters with new job classes.
