Electronic Arts has officially shut its servers on the Star Wars Battlefront beta for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, with over nine million players getting a taste of DICE’s hotly anticipated shooter over the weekend.
Taking place during the period October 8-13, the Star Wars Battlefront beta offered a detailed glimpse at what’s to come from the multiplayer-focused title, allowing players to visit a number of iconic locations from the Star Wars universe, including Hoth, Tatooine, and Sullust. Gamers were given the chance to hop into the boots of a Rebel or Empire trooper, and even had the ability to take control of the legendary Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker for a brief period, utilizing their lightsaber skills to cut down foes with deadly precision.
Gamers also benefitted from an extension to the beta, which ran for an extra 24 hours. Now that it’s done and dusted, the wait begins for the game’s release on November 17 in the U.S. and November 20 in Europe. Aside from the standard edition of the game, Star Wars Battlefront fans can also look forward to a special PS4 hardware bundle featuring a Darth Vader paintjob, while those of you who fancy splashing out on more cash can invest in the $49.99 Season Pass. Finally, there’s also a bundle containing a Han Solo fridge, which you can buy from Walmart in the shape of the Deluxe Edition.
Star Wars Battlefront will include far more than the three game modes seen in the beta, however. DICE pulled the wraps off three new modes earlier this week, including Hero Hunt, Cargo Mode, and Droid Run. It also revealed that the game will not support microtransactions, which will no doubt please the majority of gamers. Unsurprisingly, the game’s launch is in close proximity to the release of the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which opens in cinemas in December 2015. Battlefront is powered by the Frostbite 3.0 engine, and is positioned as a reboot of the celebrated franchise following an unsuccessful attempt to develop Star Wars Battlefront 3 during the previous console generation. The current build of the title is reported to run at 900p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One.
As a multiplayer-focused title, Star Wars Battlefront will not implement a single-player campaign, though players able to compete in massive online battles for up to 40 participants. The game will allow gamers to switch between a first and third-person perspective as they see fit, as you wage war as either a Rebel or Imperial Stormtrooper across several iconic Star Wars locations including Hoth, Endor, Tatooine and Jakku. Expect more characters to be announced closer to launch, as we’ve already seen leaks for other Hero units including Princess Leia and the Emperor.
So, now the beta is over, what did you think of it? Did you get to play as Vader or Skywalker? Are you still looking forward to the final product? Let us know in the comments section below.
