Team Asobi Wants To Replicate PlayStation First Party Success From 20 Years Ago

Astro Bot developer Team Asobi has revealed during a new interview this week that one of the team’s goals is to fill the gap left by other studios from around 20-25 years ago, hoping to replicate the success that PlayStation’s first-party studios enjoyed during the PS2-era.

Speaking with VGC, studio head Nicolas Doucet observed how many PlayStation studios transitioned from more cartoon-style games to making things a little more on the realistic side as Sony’s console audience swelled. It’s this gap that the team is now filling.

If you consider the history of PlayStation and how every studio has positioned themselves, it’s interesting that – and this is also what I show management – as the audience of PlayStation grew, a lot of these [studios] went from making cartoon games to a little bit more mature, hyper-realistic games.

That’s when we at Team Asobi as a studio decided that we really wanted to fill that gap, that used to be the gap filled by other studios 20-25 years ago. That’s really where we want to be: all ages, colourful etc. Even if we made a horror game, it would be a funny horror game.

Astro Bot launches for the PS5 tomorrow, and you can read our full verdict here. Team Asobi isn’t done with the game yet however, as it’s planning DLC for the platformer that will include speed run stages and new challenges.
