Techland defends CG Dead Island trailer

Developer Techland’s defended its decision to have Axis Animation cobble together a CG trailer for upcoming zombie horror romp Dead Island.

The trailer released last month and depicts the rather grisly tale of a young girl and her parents being overwhelmed by a horde of flesh-hungry undead.

However, the claret-drenched footage attracted criticism from some gamers due to the fact the trailer doesn’t represent what the final product will actually look like.

In response, Blazej Krakowiak, International brand manager at Techland, told NowGamer: "Obviously a CGI trailer is not the game," adding, "Even FPP games often use TPP cutscenes, to show something from a different point of view or even, as is the case with the Dead Island trailer, to tell a side story to expand the game world for the viewers."

He went on to state his belief that gamers can easily discern the difference between CGI and real-time footage, and reckons there’s no harm in churning out CG trailers to feed our imaginations once in a while.

"I believe that gamers know the difference between CGI and gameplay footage very well and they both serve a purpose. As long as we’re slaying dragons or zombies or terrorists while sitting on a couch, with a controller in our hands, gameplay is still symbolic. Many developers, including Techland, are working on making the games more immersive and engaging but there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving everyone’s imagination more to chew on.”

Krakowiak added: "Take an honest look at the best CGI trailers of recent years. As a gamer I love watching them. Sure, they’re a different form of entertainment but they’re still about the games I care about. Still, even the best CGI trailers are never too close to the actual gameplay and that’s quite all right, there are other videos for that."
