Kellee Santiago, President and Co-Founder of thatgamecompany, spoke with Kotaku about the progress that the company has made through its three-game career.
Santiago mentions a few weak points in the gaming industry that she’s been determined to alleviate: "I think someone who’s not a gamer is just someone who hasn’t found a game that they’ve liked yet, which is very possible because the range of experiences has been pretty limited in video games."
Santiago also spoke about the addition of online connectivity in Journey: " I think we saw a sort of the same trends in online gaming as well, which is that only a limited range of types of play have been explored and we’re curious to see what else is possible."
She also mentioned that the PlayStation Network and the PlayStation 3 are both appealing mediums with which to work: "We’ve found a lot of success on PlayStation Network because the audience there is very receptive to new types of experiences… It’s not sexy to talk about why we make decisions due to our constraints as a team or the constraints of the technology, but I think that is the artistic process of game development"
Santiago has a very driven mindset for developing video games, and she, as well as her team, have been featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s newest exhibit called The Art of Video Games. She and her development crew have shown how a group of people can grow from "that game company" to thatgamecompany.
