Speaking during an interview with The Game Business, Michal Nowakowski, joint-CEO of CD Projekt RED, has revealed that development of The Witcher Remake at Fool’s Theory is taking a backseat right now as a result of waiting on “technological dependencies” with The Witcher IV.
As a result, the studio is currently prioritising its efforts with Songs of the Past, the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. “We started a collaboration with Fool’s Theory. They were supposed to work on The Witcher 1 [remake], but we realized that needed a bit more time because of certain technology dependencies with The Witcher 4,” said Nowakowski.
The Witcher Remake was announced in October 2022, at which point CDPR revealed the project would be utilising Unreal Engine 5 and will see the classic title “rebuilt from the ground up” for modern platforms. A few months later, the studio announced that The Witcher Remake would be released after The Witcher IV, the latter of which is tentatively planned to launch in 2028.
Fast-forward to January 2024, and Fool’s Theory CEO Jakub Rokosz told publication EDGE that the remake of the fantasy-RPG revealed that the development team will be looking at areas in the original that are “simply bad, outdated, and need to be remade.” We’ll just have to wait and see how Fool’s Theory plans to tinker with the source material in this respect.
The Witcher Remake is currently without a release date.
