Ubisoft Confirms Star Wars: Outlaws Sales “Proved Softer Than Expected”

Alongside the news that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed, developer and publisher Ubisoft also confirmed what had previously been reported, that Star Wars: Outlaws did under-perform in sales.

It even cited Outlaws’ poor performance as part of the reason behind the delay, to give Shadows the best chance it could have at bolstering the studio’s financial performance.

Ubisoft confirmed in a press release that sales for Outlaws “proved softer than expected,” and reiterated its commitment to making Outlaws a “strong long-term performer” with a series of updates developers are working on right now.

“Despite solid ratings (Metacritic 76) and user scores across the First Party and Epic stores (3.9/5) that reflect an immersive and authentic Star Wars universe, Star Wars Outlaws initial sales proved softer than expected.

In response to player feedback, Ubisoft’s development teams are currently fully mobilized to swiftly implement a series of updates to polish and improve the player experience in order to engage a large audience during the holiday season to position Star Wars Outlaws as a strong long-term performer.”

The release also adds that Outlaws will be available on Steam this coming November 21, 2024, so anyone who held off on it to avoid Ubisoft’s own launcher won’t have to hold off much longer.

It might’ve been the best choice in a sense, because by that point there could be a couple or at least one key update that’s available by the time the PC release hits.

In PSU’s coverage of Outlaws, we actually got to go to Ubisoft Toronto to speak to the development team about working on Outlaws and crafting it’s narrative. Those experiences made it clear that there was a passionate and talented team working to make Outlaws the best it could be, though in many ways they’ve still fallen short.

PSU’s review of Outlaws cites many of its issues, while also highlighting (as the press release above does) that it is an excellent game for those wanting an “immersive and authentic” experience within the Star Wars universe.

We gave it an 8/10, with the big caveat that you’ll probably only agree if you’re a massive Star Wars fan, and just want to hang out in that universe, since it is otherwise a ‘perfectly fine’ video game in the most mediocre sense.
