A report on Insider Gaming has claimed that a new Far Cry game has now entered development at Vantage Studios, the Tencent-backed Ubisoft subsidiary that is handling many of the company’s major IPs.
According to the report, the new Far Cry project is known as Kodiak, and is described as an open-world FPS where “player interactions and player-driven stories take centre stage.” The game reportedly passed its conceptualisation stage earlier this month, and was built on the foundations of the Far Cry Maverick, an extraction shooter that had been in the works for quite a few years before Ubisoft recently decided to pull the plug.
Sources have told the site that this new Far Cry project is “really ambitious” and is still several years away from seeing the light of day. That’s hardly surprising given it’s only just entered development, though.
Meanwhile, Insider Gaming states that the next mainline entry in the Far Cry series, known internally as Blackbird, is now on a ‘good path forward’ after numerous delays and development hurdles. It will also have a multiplayer component where more than one player can experience the game world simultaneously.
Charlie Guillemot described Blackbird as “honestly impressive” during an internal interview at Vantage Studios, as well as “Act One” in a series of planned mainline Far Cry games with similar concepts, assuming Blackbird performs well.
While nothing has been announced by Ubisoft regarding this new Far Cry project, Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot revealed back in February this year that “two very promising projects” in the Far Cry series were in development.
Back in December 2024, Insider Gaming revealed that Far Cry 7 and Project Maverick were both in the pipeline but had been delayed internally to 2026. According to Tom Henderson back in September 2023, Blackbird will see players having 24 real-life hours to rescue their family and that you can rescue family members in any order yo wish, and it’s possible that some of them may be killed due to the non-linear story.
Project Maverick was supposedly set in in the Alaskan wilderness and would have had players battling against each other while surviving the harsh wilderness. A backpack system was also reportedly included in Maverick, permadeth, and contracts.
