Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, Communications Director at Warhorse Studios, has revealed that the recently-announced Middle-earth RPG from the developer is an outright “passion project” for the Kingdom Come Deliverance developer
“We have a completely mind-blowing ready team to delve into what this universe has to offer,” he revealed during a community stream, “And this is, again, an absolute passion project.” Stolz-Zwilling added that Warhorse is looking to make its Middle-earth RPG a “deeply immersive” experience, noting “it will be a living world. There will be interesting characters, memorable places, and of course a strong narrative focus,” he explained.
With KCD1 and KCD2, we have a very unique way of how we craft RPGs, how we understand RPGs. I said in one interview with someone at Gamescom that we want to become the new kings of RPGs. I still stand by that. I know it’s a bit ‘haha’ and nosy, but I really stand by that. I think we have our very own formula you guys love, and that’s one of the reasons why the news yesterday cast these huge waves because people trust that we know what we’re doing.
Warhorse Studios announced only recently that it’s working on two new projects, one being the aforementioned Middle-earth RPG alongside a new Kingdom Come Deliverance title. Rumours had been gathering pace prior to the reveal that the studio was working on a Lord of the Rings title, with Crystal Dynamics also named as another studio who were apparently involved with the IP.
Kingdom Come Deliverance II is the studio’s latest project and came out in February 2025, with Warhorse revealing earlier this year that the sequel had sold over five million copies worldwide.
