SEGA has announced an all-new entry in the Yakuza franchise for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
Yakuza 0 takes place in the year 1988, and stars 20-year-old Kazuma Kiryu and 24-year-old Majima Goro, who are working as a bill collector and cabaret club manager, respectively.
According to the latest issue of Famitsu magazine (via EG), Yakuza 0 takes place in Kamurocho, Tokyo, and Soutenbori, Osaka. As expected, the game will set up the events of the original game in the series, released on PlayStation 2 in 2005.
It’s interesting to see that Yakuza 0 is a cross-generation title, though we imagine the inevitable Yakuza 6 will mark the series’ first PS4-exclusive outing.
Unsurprisingly, there’s no word on a western release date. However, given the fact the last few games have sold poorly in the U.S. and Europe—with Yakuza 5 and Ishin having yet to even receive a western launch—we’re not feeling particularly optimistic.
