Rumor: Assassin’s Creed Empire to launch a new trilogy that includes ancient Rome

The rumored 2017 entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise will kick start a brand new trilogy taking gamers to locations such as ancient Greece and Rome.

As previously reported, the next instalment in Ubisoft’s multi-million selling stealth-action franchise will eschew its traditional annual release schedule for the first time since 2009’s Assassin’s Creed II, and will instead release next year.

However, it has now been reported (via GamingBolt) that the game, which is rumored to be set in Egypt, will be known as Assassin’s Creed Empire and will be the first entry in a brand new trilogy for the franchise. It will apparently be made by the same team responsible for 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

Traditionally, a new Assassin’s Creed game hits store shelves around October/November, and we usually start getting details on the latest title around spring time. However, while a main entry will apparently be skipping this year, fans of the series still have the latest spin-off titles to look forward to in the shape of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles, with the India and Russia titles due early 2016.

The last main instalment in the series, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, was released on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One in October 2015, and takes place in Victorian London in the year 1868. Read our review of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate to see what we thought of the franchise’s latest offering.

Assassin’s Creed kicked off in 2007 on last-generation consoles and the series has gone on to sell over 73 million copies globally, becoming Ubisoft’s best-selling IP to date. The franchise has also spawned a multi-media assault that includes comic books, action figures, novels, and an upcoming movie adaptation starring Michael Fassbender, which is due to hit cinemas later this year.

In addition, to the mainstream series on home consoles, Assassin’s Creed has also graced a number of portable machines including PlayStation Portable, DS, and PlayStation Vita for various spin-off titles such as Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines and Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles.
