UPDATE: Sony has officially posted on its PlayStation Twitter page that an actual maintenance may not be the case:

"We're aware that some of you are having difficulty connecting to PSN. We're looking into it - stay tuned for updates.

Until we know for certain, we can only assume that we're still experiencing the normal effects of a PlayStation Network maintenance period; those of us at PSU Towers are still online, and we have many players on our friends list that are onilne as well. Hopefully, most of you have been online this afternoon, so you don't miss out on online connectivity.

Early reports have hit the net that the PlayStation Network is currently under an unexpected maintenance.

Don't be surprised if you check your online status after this. Currently, many of us at PSU Towers have had our PlayStation 3's online for a fair amount of the afternoon, and we're still online. Much like many maintenance periods, this one may simply inhibit users who weren't online from signing into the network. After attempting connection on a couple of our Playstation Vita's, we can confirm that a maintenance is in fact currently under effect; another confirmation comes from the status identifying website isthepsndown.com, which indicates that the network is  "down for all mankind."

Some warning would have been nice, but Sony usually identifies a major update with some prior notice. So, for now, we should be able to assume that this maintenance will be short and sweet.
