God of War PS4 has been in development for 3 years

The director behind God of War on PlayStation 4 has confirmed the upcoming action-adventure behemoth has been in the works for quite some time.

Quizzed by a fan on Twitter as to how long Kratos’ Norse-inspired outing has been in the oven for at Sony Santa Monica Studio, Cory Barlog replied it’s been cooking for a whopping three years; so, chances are it was in development when PS4 first hit shelves back in November 2013.

In addition, Barlog was asked if God of War PS4 represents the start of a new Kratos trilogy. While not outright confirming this, Barlog did say that it’s the beginning of a new saga for sure. This ties in with what we’ve previously heard from the God of War team, who said that this would not be Kratos’ last game

God of War release date still to be decided

Sony announced the new God of War during its E3 2016 presentation, although has yet to commit to a release date for the hotly anticipated PS4-exclusive actioner. Moving away from the Greek-flavored influence of previous games, God of War instead sees Kratos battling new enemies alongside his young son, as he attempts to manage his notorious rage.

Sadly, we won’t be catching another glimpse at God of War at Sony’s PlayStation Experience event next month, but the team has teased that something is brewing in the not-too-distant future. In terms of gameplay, Santa Monica Studio has said we can expect changes to God of War’s progression system; mini-games also won’t be included, but we’re promised a meaty single-player campaign.

The God of War franchise launched in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, and remains a tent pole series for the PlayStation brand. The series has graced a number of formats to date, including PS2, PSP, PS Vita, and PS3, and has sold over 21 million copies worldwide as of June 2012.
