Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 struggles to maintain the series’ golden standard of 60fs during the single-player campaign on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, a report on Digital Foundry has found.
The tech wizards found that the military shooter notably has problems hitting 60fps throughout the campaign, which is disappointing considering the series has a long-standing history of hitting that particular benchmark. According to the site’s findings, the game only really hits 60fps during the quieter moments of the game when combat is not at the forefront of the action.
During cut scenes, Black Ops 3 manages to maintain 1080p for the most part, but things start to fall apart when it comes to the actual gameplay. The PS4 version comes of slightly better than the Xbox One, hitting a 1080p lock for the most part, although drops to 1360×1080 on occasions. By comparison, the Xbox One edition has a target resolution of 1600×900 for gameplay but rarely hits that mark, instead running at 1280×900.
“On the face of it, the raw metrics we drew from our captures don’t look so bad – PS4 hands in an average frame-rate of 51fps, Xbox One is at 49fps,” said Digital Foundry. “And it’s Xbox One where we see the most extreme scenarios where Treyarch’s precarious balancing act doesn’t really work out. A frantic shoot-out defending a control room is a low point: while PS4 sticks close to 60fps at various moments throughout the battle, Microsoft’s system frequently struggles to rise above the 35-45fps.”
Activision confirmed yesterday that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has become the biggest entertainment launch of the year, pulling in $550 million in its first three days on sale. The game topped the U.K. All Format Chart on its release and sold through the majority of its copies on PS4 and Xbox One. Black Ops 3 takes place 40 years after the events of its predecessor in the year 2065. With air assault rendered virtually useless thanks to the application of several high-tech defences, combat around the globe now takes place behind enemy lines in covert operations. In this war zone however, soldiers possess superhuman abilities, with humans now considered more machine than flesh and blood thanks to the array of enhancements to their bodies.
