During PAX, Square-Enix showcased new content on their upcoming sequel to Final Fantasy XIII, which is slated for release in January of 2012.
One key feature of the enriched combat system is the Mog Clock, which allows the player to manipulate a mini-game sort of sequence after interacting with a monster prior to battle. Included in the video here is a teaser to a new gameplay element that seems a bit influenced by Pokemon, allowing monsters defeated in battle to be captured and used in future combat.
These features seem quite intriguing and fresh in the console setting, and Square-Enix is looking to appease the fans that weren’t pleased with the linearity of Final Fantasy XIII. Luckily for Square-Enix, their time may come with a January release date, since many other games have been delayed into February and March.
