Yesterday’s news that Electronic Arts is set to be acquired by a group of private investors has sent shockwaves across the industry, but what will it mean for the likes of BioWare? Well, Patrick Weekes, a former lead writer who worked at the studio on the likes of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, has made it clear he’s not got much hope for the RPG giants.
Taking to BlueSky, Weekes posted a make-believe conversation that made it obvious regarding his thoughts on the whole situation:
Buyers: So your games… guns and football, yes?
EA: Mmhmm, mmhmm, mostly guns and football, yep.
Buyers: No gay stuff? No politics we’re not going to like?
EA: Haha, definitely not! Hey, could you give me one sec? I just need to shut down a studio real quick.

BioWare itself has had a rough ride pretty much since the release of Mass Effect 3 more than 10 years ago. The company followed up Commander Shepard’s swansong with the polarising Mass Effect Andromeda, and its most recent project was Dragon Age The Veilguard, which failed to reach EA’s commercial expectations.
Earlier this year, ex-BioWare designer Mark Darrah revealed that a number of internal changes at BioWare resulted in the Dragon Age team being made to feel like they were not getting enough support. Bizarrely, EA boss Andrew Wilson suggested that the fantasy-RPG failed to meet its expectations due to it lacking live service elements.
While the future of BioWare in wake of the EA buyout remains to be seen, as far as we’re aware the studio is still working on the next Mass Effect game.
