Former Sony Indie Boss Shuhei Yoshida Says ‘I’m Sorry I Was Wrong’ About PSVR 2

Speaking during an interview with Kinda Funny Gamescast, Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of PlayStation indies, spoke about his experience working on the original PSVR, although when it came to the PSVR 2 the former Sony executive appeared uncomfortable talking about what happened with the device.

“PSVR was the most fun I had, personally,” said Yoshida-san, before explaining how the concept for the device came about during the PS4 generation, which he later announced for the first time at GDC. Host Greg Miller then recalled how Yoshida spoke to him for the GDC show and proclaimed ‘we are at PlayStation 1 again, we are starting from scratch.’

In response, Yoshida-san briefly touched on the PSVR 2, stating, “I’m sorry I was wrong — PS VR2 didn’t become PS2.” When Miller asked what happened with the PSVR 2, Yoshida simply replied, “Uh, well….let’s move on.”

It’s worth noting that Yoshida wasn’t actively involved in the creation of the PSVR 2, as he had stepped down from his role as head of SIE Worldwide Studios by this time to front Sony’s indie operations. However, his comments suggesting he was wrong about PSVR 2’s fortunes in that it didn’t meet expectations.

While Yoshida was pretty reluctant to talk about PSVR 2 during the interview, he was pretty open about other topics. For example, he spoke at length about why he felt the PS Vita failed to take off, and also discussed the huge losses suffered during the PS3 launch era, something which he revealed was only covered by the success of Sony’s TV business.
