Is the PS5 backwards compatible with PS3? Can you play PS3 games on PS5? One of the biggest advantages of the PS5 over its predecessor is backwards compatibility, allowing the console to play PS4 games out of the box. However, with Xbox Series X able to play games across all four generations of Xbox consoles, fans are eager to know if PS5 is able to do more than just play PS4 games.
Could it potentially extend to the PS3 too, a console that was able to play PSOne and PS2 titles when it first arrived on the scene? Let’s find out.
Is The PS5 Backwards Compatible With PS3?
Sony has revealed that the PS5 is only backwards compatible with PS4 games, so unless something changes down the line, you won’t be able to play PS3 games on PS5. People are still holding out hope that PS3, as well as PSOne and PS2 games will be compatible with the new system, but is seems highly unlikely at this point.
Furthermore, you also have to keep in mind that PS3 had notoriously tricky architecture with the Cell process, which is presumably why PS4 wasn’t backwards compatible.
It’s not just about games ,either. The PS5 is not able to function with peripherals such as the DualShock 4 and SixAxis controller, although you can use the DualShock 4 to play PS4 games. The PS5 is due for release in holiday 2020.
