John Romero Confirms His Cancelled Shooter Has Been Saved, But It’s Now ‘A Much Smaller Game’

John Romero has revealed that his new shooter has been salvaged after it was all but cancelled in wake of the game having its funding pulled.

Now, speaking at Salon del Videojuego de Madrid, where he confirmed that the shooter has been saved and that it had “been basically completely redesigned.” Apparently, Romero Games‘ project has “nothing” to do with the previous title, but “incorporates a lot of the elements” from the game.

We’re not starting at ground zero. We can take pieces out of and put into a brand new indie game. We have a lot of stuff we can put in the game. The design is completely different, but the team is very excited about the new design.

The DOOM creator added that the project is a “much smaller game” that its previous incarnation, but is “more fun” for the develop as “the people working on it are all directors from different departments, and they didn’t actually get the to code or design or whatever to do it themselves, but now we get to actually do that.”

Romero Games revealed back in July that funding for the game had been pulled, and rumours spread that the developer itself had shuttered in wake of the layoffs that had recently hit Microsoft at the time. The studio denied these murmurs, and Romero himself said that he was still looking to resurrect the shooter, having been contacted by “several publishers interested in helping us bring the game across the finish line.”
