Speaking during its latest earnings call overnight, GameStop boss Tony Bartel said that the retail giant expects new console announcements at E3 2016 next month in Los Angeles.
Bartel didn’t go into any specific details, although it would certainly tie-in with rumors concerning new hardware upgrades from Sony and Microsoft in the shape of the PS4 Neo and Xbox Scorpio, respectively.
“We expect E3 to focus on key titles in the back half of the year and console announcements. We also expect VR to generate significant gaming consumer and press interest.”
Reports of the Neo have been doing the rounds online for a few months now. Initial whispers pinned the console for a holiday 2016 release, priced at $400.
However, later reports suggested the upgraded PS4 would likely be released in March 2017, but still receive an announcement before PlayStation VR’s launch this October. More recently, it was rumored the Neo would not be shown at E3 2016, instead getting its full reveal at the Tokyo Game Show in September.
As for Microsoft’s own endeavours, it is reported that the Scorpio will be more powerful than Sony’s upgraded machine, though take this with a pinch of salt for now.
