PlayStation 4 sales reach 9 million in U.S.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 has now sold an estimated nine million units in the United States, according to industry sales blog, ZhugeEX.

The report comes following yesterday’s news that PS4 outsold the Xbox One in the U.S. for the month of September 2015, a feat which it has managed to achieve for the past couple of months now. In addition, both systems are tracking well ahead of their predecessors during the same time frame; sales are up 40 percent in total over PS3 and Xbox 360, although year-on-year hardware sales are down by 27 percent.

In terms of software, ZugeEX reveals that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain shifted approximately 550,000 units on PS4, which represents a 44 percent drop compared to the retail performance of the PS3-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots back in 2008. However, this decline is attributed to the fact The Phantom Pain is available on last and current-generation consoles, whereas Guns of the Patriots was restricted to a single format.

Sony has enjoyed a fantastic 2015 so far, with worldwide shipments of PS4 reaching 25.3 million as of July, not to mention the fact that its flagship games console has managed to beat Xbox One in monthly U.S. sales for a number of months now. PS4’s success isn’t just limited to North America either; as of July in the U.K., the system has outsold Xbox One on a monthly basis since the beginning of the year. Sony is tipped to cut the price of PS4 in Europe this month.

In fact, PS4’s lead over its rival is so significant that even Microsoft itself has conceded that Xbox One may not be able to catch up to Sony going forward. Furthermore, according to DICE’s Alan Kertz, PS4 is winning the console war simply because it’s a more powerful machine. With the industry approaching the lucrative Black Friday/Holiday season, it’ll be interesting to see how both PS4 and Xbox One manage to perform in the U.S., as no doubt both Sony and Microsoft will be battling it out heavily to win consumers’ loyalty.
