SEGA has announced in its latest financial results that its ‘Super Game‘ has been scrapped, with the project having originally been revealed in 2021 and was set to arrive within a five-year time frame.
The Sonic the Hedgehog publisher stated that it is lowering its focus on free-to-play games going forward following the poor performance of Sonic Rumble Party and its acquisition of Rovio, the creator of Angry Birds. As such, more than 100 developers who had been working on F2P projects have now been reassigned to Full Game development teams “focussing on the mainstay IPs,” confirmed SEGA.
The company also revealed that its planned revivals of classic IP including Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage are still in the works. The Super Game project was mentioned as part of a five-year plan for SEGA, and in 2023 it was revealed that the game would emphasise user-generated content, with SEGA saying it hoped to have the game out by the end of the March 2026 fiscal year.
2026 is a major year for SEGA as it marks the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, although its major plans for the franchise’s latest milestone remain largely unknown at this point.
