The Last of Us 2 rumors: release date, characters and much more

The Last of Us 2 ranks as one of the most anticipated sequels on PlayStation 4 this side of God of War, and despite the fact developer Naughty Dog has not outright confirmed the game is in development, that hasn’t stopped the game from finding itself in the headlines over the past 18 months or so.

That’s not to say nothing is going on; we already know that the California-based studio was working on prototypes for The Last of Us 2, but details are sketchy at best. Still, something’s definitely brewing, so we’ve decided to cobble together everything we know on The Last of Us so you can get up to speed on everything regarding a possible post-apocalyptic follow-up.

The Last of Us 2 release date

Unsurprisingly, there’s no launch date on the horizon for The Last of Us 2, as nothing official regarding its development has even been confirmed at this point. However, rumors have suggested a 2018/2019 launch, although we should take this with a pinch of salt for the time being. However, 2018 would put it out five years after the original game, putting it out later in the PS4’s lifecycle, much was the case with the first game on PS3.

The Last of Us 2 details – does the game even exist yet?

Well, Nolan North seems to think it does. Despite the fact Troy Baker, who voiced Joel in the original game, stating that a sequel to the post-apocalyptic horror was not on the cards, North said some months later that Naughty Dog is indeed working on the game. The Santa Monica outfit later said that it was indeed brainstorming ideas for a follow-up, which put on ice as the studio focused on work on then-in development Uncharted 4.

Sony later chimed in on the subject, stating the format holder would welcome The Last of Us 2; further hope was ignited when Naughty Dog said it has ‘at least one more PS4 game’ in the works. The developer then said it would revisit ideas for The Last of Us 2 after it wraps up DLC for Uncharted 4. Considering the single-player DLC for the action-adventure sequel won’t be dropping just yet, we probably have a while to wait for the sequel. So, there we have it; the game isn’t actively in development (at least, not officially), but ideas are very much bubbling away at Naughty Dog HQ. So, right now we know nothing about The Last of Us 2 gameplay.

The Last of Us 2 characters

Joel and Ellie are an obvious choice if The Last of Us 2 continues the story introduced in the first game, but there’s every chance Naughty Dog will introduce an entirely new protagonist or two. Given the fact the virus has infected the whole of the United States (and the rest of the world for that matter), there’s a huge amount of potential for highlighting the struggles of a new set of characters in a completely different location.

On the other hand, we might revisit Ellie some years after her adventure with Joel; artwork found in Uncharted 4 appears to depict a young pregnant woman, who many believe is an older incarnation of Ellie. Could this be the direction Naughty Dog is heading for The Last of Us 2? If they are, then we know that Ashley Johnson would be up for reprising her role as the potty-mouthed heroine. Of course, this is all rumors and speculation for now. Hopefully we’ll hear more soon.
