The Outer Worlds 2 Dev On Generative AI: ‘We Haven’t Been Using It At All’

Obsidian Entertainment, the developer behind The Outer Worlds 2, has revealed during a chat with GameFile that the studio is not employing the use of generative AI in its writing process.

Josh Sawyer, Kate Dollarhyde, and Leonard Boyarsky touched on their past writing at the company that spanned numerous major titles, and how the experience has changed over the years. Boyarsky in particular touched on his previous comments from 2019 where he spoke about writing using AI tools, to which he said he was ready to smack his old self “upside the head” and that any concept would get “very unwieldy.”

Asked whether or not Obsidian Entertainment is utilising generative AI for its writing, Sawyer replied that it’s “not something we’ve used” while Boyarksy stated, “We haven’t been using it at all.”

The topic of AI has become a major talking point in the industry in recent times, with Square Enix stating only last week that it is aiming for the majority of its QA and debugging to be performed by AI in the next two years. Meanwhile, mega-publisher Krafton recently launched its voluntary resignation program for staff as it aims to transition to an AI first company.

The Outer Worlds 2 is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, and you can read our review here.
