Yakuza Kenzan Might Be Next In Line For The Kiwami Treatment

Yakuza producer Daisuke Sato has hinted that Yakuza Kenzan may receive a Kiwami-style makeover at some point. The spine-shattering action-RPG series has seen a number of revamps in recent years, including Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2, which are full-on remakes of the original Yakuza and its sequel, respectively.

Yakuza Kenzan Remake Might Be On The Cards

Speaking in Taiwan during the Chinese launch of Yakuza 5 on PS4, Sato-san was asked about the possibility of a spruced up version of the spin-off title. In response, he said, “personally, Yakuza: Kenzan is quite suitable to get a ‘Kiwami’ makeover.” So, it’s not a confirmation by any means, but it does suggest that the Yakuza team are at least thinking about a remake of Yakuza Kenzan.

“A lot of Western players mentioned that they want to play this game in English, and Asian players also want the game to release in Chinese. And because Kenzan was an early PS3 game, if it were to receive a simple HD remaster it would feel like it’s missing something, so in my opinion a ‘Kiwami’ version would be better,” he added.

In case you don’t remember, Yakuza Kenzan was released for the PS3 in early 2008, but it was only available in Japan. The game takes place in 1605 during the Edo period, and combines elements of previous Yakuza games with its inclusion of a main campaign complemented by dozens of side quests. Kenzan also features ancestors of main characters such as Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, and follows Miyamoto Musashi, a retired swordsman who takes up a new gig as a bodyguard in Gion, Kyoto.

Yakuza Kenzan isn’t the only Japan-exclusive entry in the series. We’ve also got Yakuza Ishin, a PS3 and PS4 title released back in 2014, as well as the PSP titles Yakuza: Black Panther, all of which never saw the light of day in the US and UK.

Speaking of spin-offs, Sega released the Kiryu-less Judgment on PS4 this past week and to say it turned out pretty good, would be something of an understatement. What do you guys think though? Are you excited about the prospect of Yakuza Kenzan *finally* arriving on these shores?
