Destiny 2 PS4 shoots down the competition

Bungie’s Destiny 2 has become the U.K.’s biggest videogame launch of 2017 thus far, although it wasn’t able to match the success of its predecessor.

Destiny 2 comfortably topped the country’s All Format Chart, but its launch sales were almost 58 percent down on the original Destiny back in 2014. Despite this, the game’s player count hit 1.2 million concurrent users over the weekend, so it wasn’t all bad news.

However, there are a number of key points as to why the sequel fell short. For starters, the game’s sales do not take into consideration digital sales of the shared-world shooter, which are far more prevalent than they were three years ago.

Furthermore, Destiny 1 launched on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, whereas the sequel has so far only rolled out for PS4 and Xbox One. The PC version will follow in late October. Regardless, there’s a whole console user base that has missed out on the game.

In terms of performance, 58 percent of all Destiny 2 copies sold were on Sony’s flagship home console, which probably isn’t all that surprising considering Sony and Activision have a deal in place right now for timed-exclusive content.
