Destiny 2 player base has seen a huge drop on PS4 and Xbox One

According to a report on GameWatcher, the Destiny 2 user base has fallen significantly since its launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in early September.

Bungie’s shared-world shooter amassed an impressive 1.2 million players on the Friday after launch, before peaking at 3.5 million soon after.

However, in the last 30 days, that figure has plummeted by almost two million, with 400,000 alone jumping ship in the last couple of days.

By October 19, the science-fiction shooter sat at 1.5 million concurrent players, which is a significant drop from its peak performance in mid-September.

For comparison, the original Destiny released in 2014 achieved a concurrent player base of 3.2 million players. Not only that, but the MMO-shooter maintained this level of activity for some time before seeing a drop off.

Destiny 2 sold fewer physical copies than its predecessor, although this has been attributed to to the rise in digital sales.

It’s still early days yet however, with Bungie yet to release the PC version of Destiny 2, which should provide a huge boost in activity.

The last few weeks have seen a number of new events released, including the Destiny 2 Iron Banner and all-new Faction Rallies.

Bungie has continued to improve the performance of its flagship shooter series with various post-launch patches. The most recent, Destiny 2 update 1.08, is now available to download.

Looking ahead, the first batch of Destiny 2 DLC is due to drop in December 2017. A second, as-yet untitled expansion will arrive in spring 2018.

Interestingly, the former Halo developer admitted in a recent interview that the studio is thinking about ‘looking beyond’ the Destiny franchise. Not that we should panic just yet, as the franchise is set to last for a decade before things start wrapping up.
