Call Of Duty Movie Is Reportedly On Hold

Activision is reportedly putting plans for a Call of Duty movie on hold, according to the film’s director, Stefano Sollima.

Sollima alongside Scott Silver of Joke fame have penned a script for the planned movie adaptation of the multi-million selling first-person shooter franchise, but has revealed to BadTaste that it’s now on ice.

The Call of Duty movie was revealed back in 2015, when Activision confirmed plans to produce a “robust cinematic universe based on the Call of Duty franchise.” The movie was originally planned to hit cinemas in 2018 or 2019, but according to Sollima, the film is no longer a priority for the publishing giant.

The movie’s announcement coincided with the formation of Activision Blizzard Studios, a new outfit dedicated to creating original content based on the company’s major IPs. The studio is headed by Nick Van Dyk, a former Walt Disney senior executive, and is based in LA.

Despite putting the film on hold, Activision is instead growing the Call of Duty series via other projects, such as Call of Duty Mobile. The company said earlier this month that the title has been installed over 150 million times on iOS and Android devices during the three-month period following its October 2019 launch.

Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard CEO, commented:

With the introduction of Call of Duty Mobile, we grew our player base from 40 million to 100 million in less than a year, and we expect significant growth in the Call of Duty franchise in 2020 as compared to 2019 as a result of this and another unannounced Call of Duty initiative.

Looking ahead, Call of Duty 2020 is currently in production and is rumoured to be a continuation of the Black OPs franchise under Treyarch. One thing we do know is that the game will not feature jetpacks, suggesting it’s going to be a little more grounded this time around.
