Netflix has announced that the upcoming fifth season of The Witcher will premiere later this year, which as previously confirmed is going to be the last season. The streaming behemoth also provided a synopsis of the final season, which can be read below.
The time of the end is nigh: dark forces are aligning all across the Continent with villainous designs on Ciri. Even if Geralt and Yennefer can save their daughter and fulfill their last wish of reuniting as a family, they’ll have to face obstacles — and enemies — the likes of which they’ve never faced before.
Both Season 4 and Season 5 of The Witcher were filmed back to back, although the series has suffered from a decline in ratings for some time now. While initially getting off to a very strong start in 2019 with Henry Cavill in the role as Geralt, viewers steadily declined with each new season, and Liam Hemsworth replacing Cavill failed to stimulate ratings. For example, Season 4 had 7.4 million views across its first four days, while the first season enjoyed 76 million viewers tuning in for at least two minutes.
While we’re on the subject of The Witcher, developer CD Projekt RED is currently working on the highly anticipated fourth entry in the video game franchise, which is set to launch at some point after 2026. In addition, a full remake of The Witcher is also in the pipeline, although that won’t see the light of day until after The Witcher IV.
