According to respected modder Lance McDonald in a post on X, the development kits for the PS5 Pro feature the ability to switch back to the standard PS5 settings using a Base Mode Emulation option.
McDonald pointed out that it would be beneficial to have this option available in retail PS5 Pro consoles, as some titles have some noticeable issues when running on the new system. Here’s what he had to say:
On PlayStation 5 Pro devkits you can enable a setting called “Base Mode Emulation” which switches the system back to a normal PS5. With so many games looking worse on PS5 Pro, they need to add that feature to the retail firmware.
Heck, just let us have the extra GPU power but lie to the software about what console it’s running on. No one wants “lower rendering resolution but PSSR will upscale it so you can’t tell!!”
We can tell, it looks shit.

The PS5 Pro was released on November 7, 2024 and offers a number of technical advantages over the original 2020 model, with faster frame rates, improved resolution, and the addition of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to greatly enhance the performance of compatible software. Many of these features are seen in the PS5 Pro Enhanced label, although the console is able to offer improvements without the need for a patch.
