Sony has said it is “strongly recommended” that developers update existing PS4 games for PS5 to ensure good compatibility.

Eurogamer reported the earlier today that games submitted for certification after July 13 will need to run on PS5. But embedded within that article they also obtained some wording from PlayStation’s internal partner website that games submitted before July 13 will not require PS5 compatibility. However, it would be “strongly recommended” that compatibility is introduced the next time a new patch or update is created for the game.

This extends the somewhat mixed messaging Sony has been giving towards PS5 backwards compatibility. As yesterday the PS5 website was updated suggesting an update will be required to play PS4 games. Sony quickly removed that piece of text, but it seems to now be confirmed that for some games an update will indeed be required to play PS4 games especially if they fail to run properly or are having severe issues.

This news comes right off of rumors that Sony is expected to host its PS5 reveal event next week. We are now able to see what games will need to be forwards compatible with the PS5 thanks to the games coming out for the rest of the year. You can also see what games will be releasing on PS5 later this year with our full list of titles.

PS5 is set to be released this Holiday.
