Sony’s Future In Games Will Be In Consoles, PC, Mobile, And Cloud Says CEO

Sony’s chief executive officer, Kenichiro Yoshida spoke in a recent interview on what the PlayStation company’s future in games will look like.

According to Yoshida, the focus will stay on PlayStation, but Sony will also focus on bringing gaming experiences to PC, mobile, and cloud users.

“In short, it will be ubiquitous. Wherever there is computing, users will be able to play their favourite games, seamlessly. Gamers will be able to find a place to play in different spaces. While PlayStation will remain our core product, we will expand our gaming experiences to PC, mobile, and cloud.”

Yoshida was also asked if he is indeed a gamer, to which he replied that he doesn’t have much time to play games. Though he singled out Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as a game he is looking forward to playing.

It’s been clear for the last few years that PlayStation intends to keep PC games a strong focus. That mobile and cloud experiences will also be given more effort also falls in the ‘to be expected’ category.

Mobile is the biggest platform in gaming, and PlayStation’s yet to really leverage it’s big IP’s on that market. Cracking that problem could open up a huge line of income for PlayStation.

Regarding its cloud efforts, it still feels like PlayStation is just getting started. PS5 games only became available to players over cloud streaming last October.

It’s also only available to those on the highest tier of PlayStation Plus. If Sony wants to grow its cloud streaming users, then it’s a feature that’ll have to become more accessible to players.

How Sony and Yoshida navigate these various focuses and efforts, will be intriguing to see in the coming years.
