Destiny dev admits original Light Level system was flawed

Destiny’s Creative Director, Luke Smith, has admitted that developer Bungie was less than thrilled about the original Light Level system implemented in the MMO-inspired shooter.

Speaking in the latest Kotaku podcast, Smith revealed that planning for the revamped levelling system seen in Destiny: The Taken King kicked off quite a while back.

"The original Light system, when that went out the door, we were not thrilled with it," he said. "We knew when that went out the door that we were going to need to revisit it. So that work basically began in earnest probably September or October [of 2014]. We had already started to work on a new proposal, the proposal that would become the Light 2.0 that’s in the game now. We were working on that as early as last fall."

Destiny: The Taken King was released a few weeks ago for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. The expansion introduces a wealth of changes to the shared-world shooter, including the aforementioned new levelling system, where your character’s level and Light Level are two separate entities. The content was well-received, topping the U.K. All Format Charts upon release and selling the majority of copies on the PS4.

In addition to revamping the levelling system, The Taken King also introduces a new Guardian subclass for each character type (Titan, Warlock and Hunter), and implements a brand new Raid. New exotic weapons have also been added, and tweaks have been made to the Nightfall/Heroic Strike playlist.
