Square Enix has confirmed that development of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has hit a significant milestone, with production on the highly anticipated JRPG revamp now being handled internally with no aid from external sources.

Speaking during a recent livestream event for Mobius Final Fantasy, the Japanese software giant also revealed that Haoki Hamguchi, the main programmer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13, is now leading development of the title.

"I’ve taken charge on the development side for Final Fantasy VII Remake," Hamaguchi-san said. "As for the whole story, (it’s a sensitive topic, but) until now, development was moving forward with external cooperation, but the company has decided to shift to an internal setup, including mass production and quality, because we want to control everything, including quality, on a stable schedule. (I won’t be leaving Mobius Final Fantasy).”

Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date is a long way off

Square Enix recently confirmed that both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 will released within the next three years, meaning they’ll turn up by 2020 at the latest. Prior to that, the company had listed the duo for release in FY2018 and beyond. Recently, the software developer has been on a hiring spree for the project, and is looking to take on a battle planner among other roles for the game.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was announced during Sony’s E3 2015 press conference, and later showed up during that year’s PlayStation Experience. Around the same time, Square Enix confirmed that the game would be split into multiple parts in order, with the company potentially releasing the project as three full games. Among the new additions to the retelling of the seminal 1997 title include a more action-focused combat system, all-new areas not seen in the original, plus more focus on side characters such as Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie.

Square Enix has shot down the possibility of seeing more remakes of titles within the Compilation of Final Fantasy 7, such as Crisis Core and Dirge of the Cerberus.
