Electronic Arts announced during its latest financial report overnight that new Anthem content will be released during the 2019 holiday quarter. There’s no clue yet as to what this will consist of, but at least EA hasn’t forgotten about BioWare’s troubled loot-shooter, so that’s good to know.
Still, we have a feeling that there was a whole lot more planned for Anthem this time last year; it’s obvious that Apex Legends has overtaken Anthem as the publisher’s main focus right now.
Anthem Getting New Content Soon
As mentioned, there’s no details on what the new Anthem content will be, but developer BioWare is already attempting to keep things ticking over with a Halloween-themed event known as Season of Skulls. Last month, it was revealed that the studio had scrapped its planned post-launch Acts in favour of seasonal updates.
Anthem was released for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One in February 2019, and on the back of a huge tidal wave of hype. EA was clearly positioning the game as a rival to Destiny, then owned by publisher Activision.
However, the game failed to live up to expectations, with a lack of content and fresh ideas making it seem like a pretty underwhelming experience compared to Bungie’s shared-world shooter, which continues to evolve rapidly.
In addition, there was a conspicuous lack of BioWare-esque staples that you would have expected to see from the Mass Effect developer. It remains to be seen if the studio can turn things around at this point.
