PS5 DualSense Microphone Can Identify Its User

Sony’s PS5 DualSense controller has a boatload of interesting features, one of which is the built-in microphone that was previously leaked via a patent. However, new info on the feature has revealed it does more than just allow you to communicate with fellow players without a headset.

New PS5 DualSense Microphone Details

According to a recent patent filed by Sony back in February (via USPTO), the PS5 DualSense microphone is also cable of identifying its user, and can block out unwanted cross chatter. This is detailed in the DualSense’s ‘microphone array,’

Captured sound can be processed to exclude sounds which do not emanate from a certain region of the interactive environment. The captured audio data from the multiple controllers can be analysed in combination.

Initially folk were a little disappointed by the news about a built-in microphone, as they assumed it wouldn’t feature an audio jack. That’s not the case at all though, as players will be able to fire up a headset if they wish.

In addition to the microphone, the DualSense pad will also include some exciting new technology, including haptic feedback, a new Create button, and the return of the PS4’s Touchpad.

Meanwhile, Sony has also taken the time to reiterate that the PS5 will be released in holiday 2020, putting aside any concerns about a possible delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We can also expect the system’s design to be unveiled soon.
