Now that both Sony and Microsoft have started talking openly about their next-generation console plans, the topic of PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett has become a hot debate among gamers following E3 2019. We already know a fair amount of details on both machines; both support backwards compatibility and feature 8K support, but what is the most powerful of the two?
According to former Kinda Funny Games chap Colin Moriarty, Sony’s new home console is packing more power under the hood than its Microsoft rival. We’ve already started comparing the two systems here.
PS5 vs Xbox Scarlett
Speaking on the PlayStation-centric Sacred Symbols podcast, Moriarty said that he’s heard murmurs about the horsepower of PS5, echoing previous comments from Game Informer’s Andrew Reiner, who also believes that the console is more powerful than Xbox Scarlett. This of course must be taken with a huge pinch of salt: until we have full tech specs of both consoles in front of us, it’s impossible to tell just what machine is able to push the most polygons.
Regardless, the word is from devs who have experience with both platforms conclude that Sony’s system comes out on top. Still, just because something is more powerful on paper doesn’t mean it’s got a free pass; it’s up to the developers to make the most out of a console’s hardware capabilities, after all.
Sony has revealed a bunch of key features for the PS5 to date, and despite the looming threat of an all-streaming device, the format holder can’t say for sure if it will be its final console. The company has also been trumpeting cross-gen play to give users a seamless transition from PS4 to PS5.
The PS5 release date has yet to be confirmed by Sony, but it’s heavily rumoured to appear in November 2020. Meanwhile, Xbox Scarlett is slated for a holiday 2020 launch.
