There’s An Official Japanese Yakuza Stage Play – And It’s Brilliant

Yakuza Stage Play

Okay, now this is cool. Entirely unbeknownst to me (which is no mean feat, I grant you), it appears that there is an official (and somewhat old) Yakuza stage play which encompasses all the main characters and events of the first game.

With actors Eiji Takigawa (Kazuma Kiryu), Gaku Sano (Akira Nishikiyama) and Ran Sakai (Haruka Sawamura) all dishing out scenery chewing performances, well staged combat sequences against the backdrop of music and locations taken from the original Yakuza video game, the Yakuza stage play does a grand job of emulating the source material in theatrical fashion.

The full over two hour stage play can be seen below (albeit in Japanese audio with no subtitles).

However! Talented YouTuber Pink Sashimi has been able to translate the first part of the stage show (which can be seen below) into full English subtitles.

The problem however, is that the translator that was involved in localizing the video (and the money to pay them), is seemingly no longer available, which is why over half a year on since the release of the first part, we still don’t have a translated second act.

Elsewhere, the latest entry in the series, Yakuza: Like A Dragon (AKA Yakuza 7), releases in Japan this month, though a western release isn’t expected for a while – until possibly late 2020. Additionally, it also seems likely that much like series spin-off Judgment before it, Yakuza: Like A Dragon will receive a full English dub in addition to the existing Japanese dub and subtitles options.
