The thing that Microsoft accidentally told us was going to happen has happened, and Sony has announced a brand new PS5 model that will eventually overtake the old one, and it’ll be available this holiday season.
This new model is definitely a lot slimmer and smaller than the launch model PS5 as it’ll now become known to be, but the new model isn’t really being called the Slim, it’s just being called the “new PS5 model.”
But what else is actually different from the two models, besides it being slimmer? Check out our comparison list of the specs between the new PS5 Slim as we’ll call it here and the launch ‘fat’ model PS5 if you will to see what’s different and what’s the same.
To clarify there are a few things we can’t yet compare, as Sony hasn’t unveiled everything there is to know about this new model. For example we don’t know how much or if at all the cooling solution has changed in the new model.
Nor do we know exactly what kind of voltage this model will require, so those comparisons are left off the list.

- 1 x USB Type-C (Hi-Speed USB) Front Port
- 2 x USB Type-A (Super-Speed USB 10GB/s) Back Ports
Looking at these specs side-by-side, it’s clear that not a whole lot has changed, though some very key changes have been made.
Adding a second USB-C port in place of the front USB-A port is an especially key fix as it now will let players use wireless headphones that perhaps have a USB-C dongle with their PS VR2.
Of course a big change is simply that you’re getting 1TB of SSD storage in the new Slim Model, versus the 825GB that the current model comes with.
The console’s operating system brings that 825GB to 667.2GB in reality, so expect to likely see the same difference in the Slim Model, so that 1TB is in reality approximately 842.2GB.
You’ll also need to buy a vertical stand for the new slim console separately, as it only comes with a horizontal stand. If you want to set it vertically then the stand will set you back $29.99 USD.
From what we can tell from the first photos of the new slim model, the horizontal stand looks to be a ‘kick-stand’ of sorts that’ll keep the console from tipping.
The launch model’s stand that comes with the console can be adjusted to fit either a horizontal or vertical orientation according to your preference.
Perhaps the biggest change of all though is the one rumour we’ve heard for some time but weren’t exactly sure would be the case, that being that the disc-drive is in fact detachable in the new model.
Players who purchase the new slim model PS5 Digital Edition will have the option to purchase a disc-drive separately to add-on to their console, at $79.99 USD.
Having the drive be removable is part of what makes the slim model smaller in the first place, and without it the digital edition is almost 2kg lighter than the launch digital model.
As these dimensions reveal however, like it was rumoured, it’s not all too different from the launch model. However one big thing you’ll have noticed by now is that the current face-plates Sony sells will not be compatible with the new model.
So you can likely expect new face plates to be sold going forward.
It’ll be interesting to see how the detachable drive changes the way people buy PS5s, if it does at all, and what other differences there are within this new slim model, specifically around its cooling solution.
When we know more, this article will be updated to include those comparisons.
