  • Though we have no idea what the PS6 will currently look like or weigh, it’s not at all out of the realms of possibility that Sony could eschew the relatively love/hate eccentricity of the PS5 and PS5 Pro designs for something a bit more, well, boxy. Time will tell.

PS6 CPU

  • Based on current reporting, it would appear that PS6 will leverage a CPU from the forthcoming Zen 6 class of silicon which is due to be available in 2026. Much, much faster than 2020 era Zen 2 CPU found in both the PS5 and PS5 Pro, the proposed Zen 6 CPU for PS6 should ensure that Sony’s next-generation PlayStation console is far less prone to CPU bottleneck scenarios (such as those seen in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon’s Dogma 2) as a result.   • Additionally, based on that same reporting, it seems that PS6 will be making the most of AMD’s next-generation UDNA GPU architecture that is set to replace the current RDNA range. In theory, this should result in substantial leaps in the PS6’s rasterization focused graphics processing capabilities over the PS5 and PS5 Pro. PS6 Image Upscaling – PSSR 2.0, PS6 Frame Generation

  • Much like the PS5 Pro before it however, the biggest leap that PS6 will provide over its predecessor will be the increased visual fidelity it’ll be able to provide thanks to Machine Learning. With PS5 Pro this AI-powered solution manifested as PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) – an image upscaling algorithm that allowed Sony’s previous console to upscale to much higher resolutions from much lower ones, resulting in increased performance and a ‘best of both worlds‘ approach that allowed players to have the level of detail seen in a Quality mode preset along with the 60 frames per second minimum seen in a Performance mode preset. Can PS6 Output At 8K Resolution For Games?

Yes, the PS6 can absolutely enable 8K resolution games. The PS5 Pro can already do this and has numerous games supporting 8K resolution, so there is no reason why a presumably much more powerful PS6 would not be able to.

PS6 Optical Disc Drive

  • Currently, we do not know if the PS6 will come with an optical disk drive like the PS5 did. However, given that the PS5 Slim offered a version with a drive and one without, and PS5 Pro consoles just didn’t come with one at all, it’s almost certain that Sony will release a digital only version of the PS6. However that said, there are millions upon millions of physical PS5 games out there and assuming that the PS6 will be backwards compatible with the PS5, there will have to be a way for gamers to transfer their physical library from the current console generation to the next.

PS6 Teraflops

  • The PS6 number of teraflops have yet to be announced, but performance-wise it’ll certainly outstrip both what the PS5 and PS5 Pro were capable of.

PS6 Memory

  • The PS6 memory allocation and speed have yet to be announced, but gamers can expect a sizable improvement over what we have seen in the PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles.

PS6 Fans/Cooling Solution

  • Though we don’t know how the PS6 will cool off its impressive architecture at this juncture, an efficient solution will need to be found.

PS6 3D Audio

  • One of the most underrated aspects of the PS5’s technical makeup was the Tempest Engine which facilitated an implementation of hardware driven 3D audio technology. With PS6, it’s safe to say that the console will almost certainly make use of 3D audio once more and will likely embrace even more cutting edge aspects of audio technology to boot.

PS6 Storage

  • With the standard PS5, PS5 slim and PS5 Pro consoles offering up 825GB, 1TB and 2TB storage variants respectively, I would expect the PS6 to come in with a 1TB of standard SSD storage too. The reason for this is that considering the more costly CPU, GPU, memory and other silicon that the PS6 will feature, packing in a 2TB drive would add too much to the overall cost that would in turn be passed onto the consumer.

PS6 DualSense Controller

  • Already a brilliant controller, I would fully expect Sony to iterate on the DualSense controller with PS6, introducing a whole new range of features as a result. DualSense 2.0 here we come.

PS6 Ethernet/WiFi

  • At a bare minimum, PS6 should support the newly announced (as of January 6, 2025 anyway) HDMI 2.2 standard. HDMI 2.2 allows for resolutions up to 10K at 120 Hz, 4K at up to 480 Hz and 8K at up to 240 Hz – which is pretty nuts to say the least. In addition, HDMI 2.2 boasts a new protocol called Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) to improve audio and video synchronization, too.

PS6 USB Ports

  • PS6 will definitely boast the latest USB 4 technology. Beyond that, the number of USB ports is currently unknown.

PS6 Bluetooth

  • PS6 will very probably support the latest version of Bluetooth, whatever that ends up being.

PS6 Operating System

PS6 Backwards Compatibility

  • At the risk of inviting catastrophe, there is no way that Sony will not ensure that the PS6 is backwards compatible with the vast range of PS5 and PS4 titles that are currently out there already. I just don’t see it. In terms of just how the PS6 could potentially enhance or update previous generation PlayStation games however, that’ll be a markedly different story.

  • Assuming that PSVR 2 is still around by the time PS6 launches, we should assume that Sony’s next-generation console will indeed be compatible with it. If it’s not around then, well, it won’t be.

PS6 Voltage, Power Consumption

  • This is where things get a little trickier. With all of those advances in the silicon, it’s almost certain that the PS6 will consume a chunk more power than the current PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles. As to exactly how much – that will depend on precisely what is going on under the hood – and hopefully Sony won’t be making us wait too much longer for a full set of confirmed PS6 specifications.
